Race information - Winter Challenge 2011

The race has been designed to provide options both for experience and novice athletes.

This is a team event for teams of two people (three categories Mixed, All Males and All Females). Both members of a team have to stay together throughout the course (this is not relay).

There are two courses – Pro and Lite with approximate distances under 90 km and 60 km (maximum distance through all CP's) and Cut-off times after 8.0 and 7.5 hours respectively.

Expected leading times are 5.5 and 4.0 hours.  Both courses involve navigation to a series of Check Points (CP). All CP's are optional - that is, you can omit any of them. However, beware, there will be a time penalty for missing each one.

ProLiteBoth courses are designed as a clover leaf shape with two centres acting as the transition areas.

The start/finish and Transition Area 0 (TA0) are located in the same place.

Transition Area 1 (TA1) is in a different place, several kilometres away.

Equipment bag

A bag will be given to each team at registration. Participants are recommended to put their trekking equipment, some water and food in these bags. These bags will then be transported to Transition Area 1 (TA1) by the organisers. The maximum allowed weight is 10 kg. In order to ensure that all the bags are at the TA before the first teams arrive, all teams must have brought their equipment bag to the designated area, near registration, by 8.30 am.

Event Map

Map for the event will be based on fire maps with some corrections. Scale will differ for all sections. Most likely 1:25000 (250m in 1 cm) for trekking and kayaking stages and 1:50000 (500m in 1cm) for MTB stage. Although we are actualizing map as much as we can some minor trails and treks may occur to be misplaced due to constant firewood collections by heavy vehicles.

Check points

Check points will be equipped by orienteering white/orange signs about A3 size with Sportident stations. The SPORTident electronic timing system is used regularly at orienteering and adventure racing events. Participants carry an SI-card which they insert into the SI unit at each control. The SI-card records the control number and time visited. After the competitor "punches" the "finish" SI unit at the end of their course, the information on their SI-card can then be downloaded to computer and a printout made showing the controls visited, time visited, split times between controls and total elapsed time.

Water

Competitors are expected to cater for the water on their own. Although organization will provide some water in TA1 teams are expected to have their own.

Cut-off times

If team fails to finish until Cut-off time it will be disqualified. However the courses are designed to allow reasonably fit participants to finish in time.  Teams can miss some CPs and to be in time at the finish line. At the mid of the race there will be additional Cut-off time, if team arrives to this point later they will be advises to follow straight to the finish line. Exact timelines will be given before the start after all tests of distance.Missing CP are subject to time penalty, and team will be ranked according racing time plus penalties.
