X-Marathon Returns: Australia's Premier Adventure Race Heads to Patonga Patonga, NSW

x-marathon adventure race

Adventure racing teams from across Australia will converge on the Central Coast this year as the legendary X-Marathon makes its much-anticipated return on 30–31 August, with race headquarters based in the picturesque coastal village of Patonga.

Set in one of New South Wales’ most spectacular and storied landscapes, this year’s X-Marathon offers a thrilling expedition-style adventure through rugged bushland, coastal headlands, and the mighty Hawkesbury River system. With a course designed to challenge both body and mind, teams will navigate their way through an authentic wilderness experience like no other.

Hawkesbury River: History and Wild Beauty Combined

The Hawkesbury River—an iconic feature of this year’s course—has long held historical significance as one of Australia’s earliest colonial transport routes and a lifeline for surrounding communities. Today, its vast network of inlets, remote trails, and tidal waterways offers a spectacular playground for paddling and navigation, surrounded by sandstone cliffs, dense forests, and hidden beaches.

Adventure racing fans may also recognise the area from the legendary AROC Adventure Races, which once brought hundreds of competitors into this wild, stunning region. The legacy of those early events lives on, making this a return to classic racing terrain—with a fresh twist.

 Real Navigation, Real Adventure

X-Marathon is known for delivering authentic, navigation-based racing. There are no marked trails or shortcuts—teams must rely on their map, compass, and each other to find every checkpoint. The event is tailored for those who want more than just a fitness challenge: it’s for those who crave strategy, resilience, and raw outdoor experience.

Local Roots, National Impact

Race directors Serge and Maria are especially proud to set this year’s course in their own backyard. Having moved to the Central Coast four years ago, they now call this stunning region home. “We’ve explored every inch of this area,” says Maria. “It’s wild, diverse, and full of surprises. We can’t wait to share it with the adventure racing community.”

For them, this edition of X-Marathon is deeply personal—a celebration of the landscapes they’ve come to love and a tribute to the community that welcomed them.
